Mobility scooter repairs.

Almost all scooters can be repaired to some extent. Even if the scooter is no longer made, there are sometimes parts still available by retailers other than the manufacture. I try to look in all directions before dubbing a "sick" scooter as non-repairable. Scooter's mean a lot to their owners. They get them to and fro, and in many cases the scooter fits them just right. So getting a new scooter could be hard when trying to match a new one up as a replacement for their old familiar unit. Needless to say, start with a repair first.

There is faster money in selling a scooter than repairing one.

Its simple. Why repair one, when selling one makes faster money? I was taught to repair the unit and if all else fails, then sell them one. The people who showed me how to repair scooters were really keen on repairs. It offered people the option of repairing an expensive scooter that they have come to love, and depend on, so that they didn't have to buy into something that didn't feel the same.

There was no way my boss was going to let a scooter go out of our shop with out it being fixed properly. If it continued to have issues, we would continue to repair it until it was right. Which brings me to another point.

Scooters will do some strange things. What you thought was repaired was only the beginning of multiple problems. Within those multiple problems you may find a wire that has been broken within it's insulation, that shows no signs of damage, and when you test its resistance, it might even show that it has continuity until it is bent or moved around and then, Aha!

When Is a scooter not worth repairing?

Its a matter of cost. If the repair was 50% of the new cost then I'd suggest a new scooter. Chances are the scooter is fairly worn by then. Unless your scooter is in new condition and and there is no major wear or tear, then we could talk about spending the 50% or possibly even more. The scale is based on scooter condition and cost of repair. No sense in spending big on a scooter that needs tires, throttle, plus a controller or transaxle.

Believe it or not, you can buy a used scooter that looks to be perfect, and "just" needs batteries...... only to find out that the person who parked it, did so because it had major failure like a controller or transaxle issues. Sometimes parts can be flawed from the factory and the scooter never had a chance to be used very much, thus it sits in a "like new" condition.

If you are not familiar with how to repair scooters, you may not want to attempt to fix it. There could be something very simple to repair at hand, and the inexperienced repair person can short something out and create more problems.
